Debate Questions & Format


 

7 p.m. - Start Time


 

Measure H Debate:

One person will speak for Measure H for 2 minutes.

One person will speak against Measure H for 2 minutes.


 

City Council Candidates Opening Statements:

Each City Council candidate will have 2 minutes for an opening statement. 


 

Debate Question 1:

What is your “vision” for Upper Pier Avenue and how do you see the design of the “streetscape” project? 

Should Upper Pier Avenue remain at four lanes or reduce it to two lanes? 

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond. 


Debate Question 2:

Would you widen the sidewalks and should the wider sidewalks be used for outdoor dining, and or retail sales? 

What type of “business mix” do you want or not want on Upper Pier Ave?

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond. 


Debate Question 3:

Do you feel there are any “lessons learned” regarding the 1997 Pier Plaza renovation, from the RU/DAT design study to what Pier Plaza is today, that can be applied to the Upper Pier Avenue project?

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond. 


Questions from members of the public:

Members of the public can come forward to ask questions from the podium.

Each member of the public will be limited to one question regarding debate questions 1, 2 and 3.

Questions from the public will be directed to all candidates.

Each candidate will have up to 1 minute to respond to a question from the public.


 

Debate Question 4:

How large of a parking structure should be built, adjacent to the civic center (City Hall), at the community center or near residential neighborhoods? 

Will these new parking garages make more parking available for the downtown bar patrons?

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond. 


Debate Question 5:

What do you think of “mixed use” development on Pier and Hermosa Avenue

How much of Pier and Hermosa Avenue should be converted from existing single story to new three story buildings?

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond. 


Debate Question 6:

Regarding these proposed changes to Hermosa Beach; the Upper Pier Avenue project, new parking garages, “mixed use” development and a new civic center / public safety building. 

Should the public input to these changes move forward as a series of suggestions to the city council?

Or should these changes be made part of a well defined urban development plan? 

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond.

How significant of a problem is crime and alcohol related crime on Pier Avenue and Upper Pier Avenue?

If there is a crime problem, what caused it?  How would you fix the problem?

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond. 


Debate Question 8:

Would you add new alcohol outlets or upgrade existing ABC licensed restaurants, bars or nightclubs with extended hours, dancing or live entertainment in Hermosa Beach

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond. 


 

Debate Question 9:

Would you add new or upgrade existing adult oriented businesses in Hermosa Beach

Such as pornography stores, massage parlors or tattoo shops.

 Each candidate has up to 1 minute to respond.
